FTMR Lymphedema Therapy & Management Program

Not sure if you have Lymphedema?

Lymphedema, a build-up of fluid, usually in the arms or legs, which causes swelling, may slow wound healing, and increase your risk of infection.

As you may know, to date, lymphedema has no cure. It is a condition that requires lifetime management. Living successfully with lymphedema depends upon yourself, your family, and your caregiver.

Types of lymphedema:

  • Primary & secondary lymphedema
  • Post-surgical lymphedema
  • Lipolymphedema

 Lymphedema Symptoms:

  • Lost flexibility
  • Pain or numbness
  • Swelling
  • Tightness or heaviness
  • Weakness
  • Aching or discomfort

Talk with your doctor about lymphedema therapy if you have any of the above.

FTMR’s specially trained lymphedema therapists have gone through the intensive certification process at the Academy of Lymphatic Studies for treating this condition.

Because we have decades of experience treating Lymphedema, we appreciate how limiting and uncomfortable lymphedema can be and how it can restrict your quality of life.

What to Expect For Your First Appointment:

During our first visit to your home, our Functional Transformational Mobile Rehab Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) evaluates you, they explain your condition and ways to reduce your risk of developing or controlling it. They discuss your health challenges, self-care management, answer questions and detail your treatment options.

Together, you decide on the best treatment regimen. Our CLT starts your therapy plan while explaining and demonstrating the procedures, so you can manage your lymphedema and return to the quality of life you’re missing. FTMR’s CLTs always conduct your therapy session in the comfortable surroundings of your home.

On-Going Care:

In our follow-up visits you’ll learn to:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Put on compression bandaging
  • Reduce chronic pain and swelling
  • Return to many of your daily activities
  • Care for your condition independently
  • Care for your skin
  • Involve your loved ones and caregiver from the start

The goal of our therapy is to reduce your swelling and maintain a reduction in fluid volume. Our patients have seen great success with our tailored therapy strategy.

From our experience, when we come to our patients’ homes, we find that our patients and their caregivers see faster improvement and gain a better grasp of managing their Lymphedema so they can live a normal life and enjoy the riches Venice offers.

Your Treatment

If you have lymphedema, we use a combination of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), manual, gentle lymph drainage massage, compression bandaging, and skincare. This is often referred to as the “gold standard” treatment. It includes:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD): This gentle, manual treatment technique redirects the lymph fluid from the swollen limb(s) to your fully functioning lymph nodes.
  • Compression Bandaging: A series of short elastic bandages and padding used to prevent fluid from re-collecting in your limb(s).  The bandages also soften any “fibrotic” or hard tissue in your limb(s). Once we’ve obtained your limb’s maximum fluid reduction, we fit you with a compression sleeve that we recommend you wear daily. If your lymphedema is more complex, we may require you to wear a special garment at night.
  • Exercise: We show you flexing exercises, while bandaged, you do every day. This helps your muscles push the fluid from your swollen limb(s), improving the bandaging’s performance.
  • Skincare: The skin of a swollen limb is often dry, weak, and highly susceptible to infection. An important part of our CDT is instructing you about proper skincare.
  • Once your swelling is reduced, we confirm the compression garment(s) you will wear is properly fitted to minimize the chance of fluid retention reoccurring.

Why Functional Transformational Mobile Rehab?

Our CLT comes to you! FTMR provides the benefits of a traditional outpatient therapy clinic without the complications faced when traveling to a clinic.

We all know finding a ride when you need to travel for your therapy can be a headache and painful, especially if you’re struggling with limited mobility. Plus, unnecessary travel or exposure outdoors increases your risk of getting infections. It’s an important consideration especially if you are still healing from major surgery.

By coming to you, we can check that you are sticking to your Lymphedema regime, so you see improvement faster.

FTMR gives you customized care and personalized Lymphedema therapy on your schedule. This means appointment flexibility for you. And we never over-schedule. You benefit from one-on-one time with our CLTs

Insurance

We’re a Medicare Part B-approved provider. You don’t need to be home-bound to use our services. If you are a traditional Medicare Part B patient, expect to pay no more than you typically would at a brick-and-mortar facility. If you have secondary insurance, there are no out-of-pocket costs.

We also work with a few select insurance providers. As of August 2021, we are a United Health Care in-network provider and are waiting for in-network accreditation from Humana, Cigna, and Aetna. Until we receive the accreditations, we are considered out-of-network.
