Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema appears as swelling in the arms or legs, and is caused by blockage in your lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of your immune and circulatory systems, and lymphedema usually pops up after there has been damage to this system, or if your lymph nodes have been removed. This condition is most commonly seen in post cancer treatment patients.

In addition to swelling, lymphedema can present itself as pain and discomfort in the areas that are swollen. The most common treatments for this condition include exercise, wrapping, massages, and compression.

The National Lymphedema Network is a great resource for more information about lymphedema, including how to prevent and manage this condition. Whether you are a patient, health professional, or simply would like to know more about this condition and what you can do to help, the National Lymphedema Network has the tools you need to get started.

How Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab helps patients with Lymphedema

When your doctor recommends that you seek out therapy in order to fully recover from a physical issue, who do you go to – a Physical Therapist, or an Occupational Therapist? You may think that a Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist both perform the same tasks, but there are actually some clear differences between the two.

Our Complete Decongestive Therapy

The lymphedema therapy routine at Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab is a cohesive, 5-step process that assists with flow improvement and recovery. The 5 steps are as follows:

  1. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) – At this stage, we will manually mobilize the fluid that is trapped in your lymphatic system and effectively drain it from problem areas. This technique is very light and gentle, and is relieving as well.

  2. Compression – Your lymphedema therapist will use low stretch compression bandages to help increase your lymph flow. We do this by gradually increasing the resting and working pressures via the compression bandages, which ultimately decreases the lymphedema in the affected limb. Additionally, this technique assists in the efficiency of the muscle pump, which also decreases the lymphedema and prevents fluid from returning.

  3. Skin Care – We apply special ointments and creams to reduce your risk of infection. This also helps prevent your skin from drying out or cracking.

  4. Exercises – Your lymphedema therapist will walk you through some basic exercises that will encourage and improve lymph flow. These exercises will also improve your Venous Return (VR), which is the flow of blood that travels back to your heart.

  5. Self-Care Management and Training – After your first session is complete, your lymphedema therapist will walk you through basic self-care procedures to ensure that you aren’t at risk of getting an infection. You’ll also be shown some simple exercises that you can do on your own, which will help lessen your lymphedema and prevent future blockages.

After the 5-step process is complete, you can feel free to contact Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab about any further issues or questions you may have. Our team will also reach out periodically to check up on your progress and see if there is a need for another session.

A Lymphedema Therapy Routine That Works

Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab has had a lot of success with this 5-step process. We developed this routine from the tools and experience we’ve gained throughout our work in this industry over time. We’ve been able to narrow down the most effective techniques and design a plan that truly works.

In all of our services, our primary goal is your recovery. Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab works hard to do everything we can to ensure that you have the best chance at healing, increased mobility, and decreased pain and discomfort. Our past lymphedema patients have all enjoyed positive results when undergoing our complete decongestive therapy process.

Our specially trained lymphedema therapists will treat you with care, and will do everything to ensure that there is as little discomfort as possible while working with you through our 5-step process. These licensed professionals will be happy to explain each step as you go through them, and will be able to answer any questions you may have throughout the process.

One of the ways we are able to help is with our new 3D imaging scanner. This helps with early detection of breast cancer related lymphedema. It also helps us with creating custom garments for our patients.
